Mastering Business Success - The Vision

As a vision board coach having systems and organisation in place has been key to my own success. I am a key believer in using my vision board to help me stay focused on my dreams and desires. This blog I caught up with Dani Louise Smith who is a known as the 'Queen of organisation' to ask her some questions around how organisation can help you in your business.

Lisa - How can a strong organisation improve your business success?

Dani - I believe that without it you're business is more open to curve balls, distraction and as managing a business includes juggling many things it can lead to overwhelm and burn out. I often find clients or peers becoming ill as a result of it in worst cases and I'm no exception. To avoid this, organisation can improve the stability of the business, so you can consistently earn more and do more. It definitely becomes easier to manage when your ducks are in a row.

Lisa - How can a small business build and organisation structure that works for them?

Dani - My first bit of advice is that it's ok for it to take time to figure out what does work for you. You cannot know from the start without trying and testing things first, because what works for one business, won't for another and as individual people we all have different circumstances, lifestyles and responsibilities too, which effects how we run a business and can be organised.

However, my second bit of advice is not to allow those circumstances to prevent you from building something extraordinary. To get to a place of being an organised queen and succeeding with work life balance there needs to be a mindset shift, where you recognise where you're making excuses verses where something is a reason to move forward and make progress.

I could share many strategies to get organised, and I do with my clients, but ultimately these two things must be known first, in order to discover what actually is right for you.

I don't want you to go away without something to work on though, so I would like to share my top three areas to organise for business success.

1. Your time. Of course I would need to cover this, as it's fundamental! It's nit just business time management, but life time management as well, because what you do in business impacts your life and what you do in your life impacts your business. The biggest shift of all as seeing time as something that is an exchange of energy that you cannot get back or create more of but you can be in control of how you spend it and it becomes more about priorities and boundaries that just sitting with 'not having enough time'.

2. Set clear goals. Without knowing exactly what you want there's nothing to actually organise, even your time, because you need to know where to spend it! Clarity is the biggest challenge for people who haven't set goals before, so I would recommend writing down what you don't want and then the opposite of that is clarity on what you do want. Give this excuse a go and see how you feel.

3. Have a system to track everything. Combining nothing time management and your goals, you definitely need a system that you know you can get on board with. I use a project management system to mote down tasks for my whole life and it makes a huge difference! I would be lost without it and it works for me. To find what works for you I recommend taking a single small project and finding different methods you can use to plan and track and after practising and seeing what works you can then move forward with a system for everything! I use Bascamp for mine and I absolutely love it!

Lisa - How important is it to set your goals for your business?

Dani- Extremely important. Having goals gives a sense of direction. If there's no vision for where you're going, then you're aimlessly throwing spaghetti at the wall to see if it sticks, whereas if you set clear intentions first then you can actions based on those desires. It's much easier and quicker to get what you want with a goal set and aligned actions in place.

Lisa - What are the most common pitfalls in business organisation, and how can these be avoided?

Dani - The biggest one is mindset that most people believe they are not organised. You can learn and grow. I never used to be this organised at all. It was at the pit of overwhelm I changed things. Another big one is time management and a lot of the challenges with it are due to fixed mindset. Time is within your control more than you think and it's more so about priorities for how you spend it but organising it well in this way is often a common downfall for business owners. You need to speculate to accumulate too and so when you need to become more organised because you don't have a lot of time, it's often time that holds you back from getting started and so it becomes a vicious cycle of staying where you are. It always pays to break the cycle and just start. It's often a chicken and egg situation that happens regularly, where one cannot be without the other.

Lisa - What are the key practices to help businesses stay focused on their end vision?

Dani - It's really important to stay connected to your vision and check in with it regularly. I feel that regular reflection is a huge part of this. I'm always asking what's working well, what isn't and what I can do differently with any of my visions and always set new goals every year, in the form of a vision board and a book of things I want to manifest. I also check in with my goals and vision on a quarterly basis, creating Mini visions boards that I stick in my office and on my phone wallpaper so I see them daily to connect with them. I have a mix of personal and business goals on mine and I then reflect weekly and tick off anything I have achieved. This keeps me on track to ensure that the actions I take are not directing from where my focus needs to go.

Lisa - Do you have something in which can help people on their business journey?

Dani - Yes, I absolutely do! I have my book, Business Fundamentals, which about building a sustainable foundation for a successful business but with an organised approach, because I truly believe in the power of organisation! It's like a course in a book and is an incredible personal development resource that can support the growth of your business.

We hope this Q&A session has answered your questions and provided valuable insights into organisation to help your business. Whether you're just getting started or looking to improve, remember that the key is to stay focused on your vision and check it regular.
